This mural speaks to youth empowerment and representation, as the students advised the participating artists on their designs before the art was finalized via a lengthy digital Zoom discussion, where the students expressed their needs for the murals to aptly represent them in a way that was reflective of their own voices. One thing that stands out in this design is the addition of the school chant, “You Check Us Out”, as it’s a part of EMKS school culture that has been present since the first class attended 10 yrs ago. The characters in the mural are designed to express diversity and culture that is specific to The Paseo area, which is urban and layered. The colors in the mural are derived from the cafeteria’s interior, which naturally added to the overall ambiance of the room.
