I took a small group of youth participants, living in Jackson County, MO, who were interested in art and lead them through a complete mural painting project. This entailed conducting interviews, showing them how to order paint, procedures for paint mixing, basic color theory and etc.
The group of students were also required to make a series of sketches based on the idea that our mural would, somehow, embody "the spirit of community". In order to construct our concept for the mural, we took the portions of everyone's sketches that we resounded with most. The group decided that, since the majority of the murals in the area spoke to adults, they instead wanted to make something more whimsical and free flowing, which is something other kids would take notice of.
